Sewage Protection Program - One Fee the Rest is Free

Septic systems were never intended for lifetime use without maintenance. Although it is in the homeowners’ best interest to operate and maintain systems correctly, many do not know how. Deficient of necessary information to maintain their systems, where the system is located, or even what type of system they utilize, can bring about costly repairs, unnecessary expense and in some cases legal actions and fines. Homeowners can be held liable for systems that pose a threat to the public health and environment.

Three main reasons why septic system maintenance is so important.
The first reason is to protect the health of your family. When septic systems fail, inadequately treated household wastewater is released into the environment. Any contact with untreated human waste can pose significant health risks, and untreated wastewater from failing septic systems can contaminate nearby wells, groundwater, and drinking water sources. Many times family pets come in contact with the wastewater and carry the contaminants into the house, thereby, exposing homeowners and their families to wastewater bacteria and microorganisms. The second reason is Money. Failing septic systems are expensive to repair or replace, and poor maintenance is a common cause of early system failures. The third reason to maintain your septic system is to protect the economic health of your community. Failed septic systems can cause property values to decline. In some cases, sales of properties with failing systems can be delayed until the system is repaired or replaced.

Maintenance a Must:
Just as an aerobic unit used for Spray and Direct Discharge systems requires monthly monitoring by a state certified wastewater operator, conventional and experimental systems require a regular operation and maintenance program. Early detection of problems is vital, however, if overlooked they can result in expensive repairs, pumping, and/or replacement of components such as pumps, alarms, time clocks, motor/blowers, or even lateral lines.

Keeping your wastewater system functioning correctly and efficiently is only achieved by proper operation and maintenance on a continuous basis. Because most homeowners abuse their systems unknowingly, this emphases the importance of a high-quality maintenance program. This is best achieved by utilizing a trained licensed technician, as most homeowners are not as knowledgeable about wastewater systems.
